A successful businessman
We often think of Peter as a poor fisherman. But he was a successful fisherman having multiple boats, hired workers, and living in a lush home in a choice location.
Perhaps this merely means Peter originally was from Bethsaida even though he now lived in Capernaum.
It seems Peter's house was right next to the synagogue. Certainly, the excavated ruins in Capernaum of the synagogue and of a nearby house match this verse. This house was a short stroll to the synagogue having multiple rooms in a ring around a central courtyard and a large open area outside the door. It was later converted into a church and is thought by some to be Peter's house.
After the death and resurrection of Jesus, Peter returned home and was able to go out fishing whenever he wished. This implies he had at least one boat and a place to keep it. It also implies he had someone looking after his house and boat during his long absences while travelling with Jesus. Likely, he had hired workers, even supervisors, running his fishing business in his absence.
